The 2019 Tesla Model Y, although not delivered until March 2020, marked Tesla’s first production compact crossover and instantly became the blueprint for the modern electric family SUV. Built on the Model 3 platform, the early Long Range RWD (introduced first) and Long Range AWD variants delivered up to 316 miles of EPA range (later revised to 330 miles), a 0-60 sprint as quick as 4.8 seconds in Dual Motor form, and a minimalist, lounge-like interior with a panoramic glass roof, 15-inch central touchscreen controlling nearly everything, and seating for five (later seven with the optional third row). With its low center of gravity, crisp regenerative braking, available Autopilot (and Full Self-Driving Capability as an upcharge), frunk plus deep under-floor storage, and a drag coefficient of just 0.23, the 2019-2020 Model Y combined hatchback practicality, sports-car acceleration, and futuristic tech in a package that quickly made it the best-selling electric vehicle globally and proved EVs could dominate the heart of the mainstream market.
